Value Stream Mapping

Event Details

INTRODUCTION

How much of your process time actually creates value for the customer, and how much is consumed by waiting, movement, inventory, rework, delays and unnecessary handovers? Many organisations try to improve individual activities without first understanding how materials and information actually flow across the entire process.

Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is a practical Lean tool used to visualise an end-to-end process, identify value-added and non-value-added activities, expose bottlenecks and highlight opportunities for improvement. Rather than examining one isolated process step, VSM helps teams see how different activities, departments, information flows and waiting points connect to influence overall lead time and performance.

This practical 1-day programme introduces participants to the principles and application of Value Stream Mapping for workplace process improvement. Participants will learn how to define a value stream, understand common VSM symbols, collect relevant process information and construct a Current State Map showing process flow, inventory, waiting time and information movement. Participants will then analyse the current state to identify Lean waste, bottlenecks, excessive lead time, process gaps and improvement opportunities. Using these findings, they will develop a simplified Future State Map showing how the process could operate with improved flow, reduced waste and better coordination. Through case studies and practical mapping exercises, participants will gain hands-on experience in transforming process observations into a structured VSM Improvement Action Plan that can support Lean, Kaizen and continuous improvement initiatives within their organisation.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

√ Understand the purpose and benefits of Value Stream Mapping.
√ Identify value-added and non-value-added activities.
√ Recognise the 8 Wastes of Lean within a process.
√ Define the scope and boundaries of a value stream.
√ Use common VSM symbols and mapping conventions.
√ Map material and information flows systematically.
√ Distinguish between process time, waiting time and lead time.
√ Develop a practical Current State Value Stream Map.
√ Identify bottlenecks, waste and process improvement opportunities.
√ Develop an improved Future State Map.
√ Prioritise improvement actions based on VSM findings.
√ Apply VSM to support Lean and continuous improvement activities.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

This programme is suitable for Managers, Executives, Supervisors, Process Engineers, Industrial Engineers, Manufacturing Engineers, Production Personnel, QA/QC Personnel, Lean and Continuous Improvement Teams, Warehouse and Logistics Personnel, Supply Chain Personnel, Process Owners and employees involved in process, productivity or operational improvement activities.

COURSE BENEFITS

This programme helps participants gain greater visibility of how work actually flows across a process. By applying Value Stream Mapping, organisations can identify waste, delays, unnecessary activities and bottlenecks more systematically, enabling teams to focus improvement efforts on areas that provide the greatest impact on quality, cost, delivery and overall process efficiency.

TRAINING METHODOLOGY

This workshop adopts a practical and participative approach, combining trainer explanation, workplace examples, guided discussion, Lean waste analysis, mapping exercises, case studies and Current State/Future State development. Participants will progressively apply Value Stream Mapping techniques to realistic process scenarios and develop improvement actions that can be related directly to their own workplace.
