INTRODUCTION
Why can a manufacturing process appear to be running normally yet still produce defects or fail to meet customer specifications? How can quality and production teams distinguish between normal process variation and unusual conditions that require corrective action? Statistical Process Control (SPC) provides a structured, data-driven approach to monitoring process behaviour and identifying variation before it develops into serious quality problems. By using control charts and statistical techniques, organisations can distinguish between common-cause and special-cause variation, detect abnormal process conditions and make better decisions about when intervention is necessary.
However, a statistically stable process is not necessarily capable of meeting specification requirements. Process Capability Analysis complements SPC by evaluating whether a stable process can consistently produce output within required specification limits. Capability and performance indices such as Cp, Cpk, Pp and Ppk provide valuable information about process spread, centring and long-term performance.
This practical 2-day programme equips participants with the knowledge and skills to collect and interpret process data, select appropriate control charts, establish control limits, recognise out-of-control signals and evaluate process stability. Participants will also learn how to perform and interpret process capability analysis and identify improvement priorities. Through practical calculations, case studies and process-data exercises, participants will develop greater confidence in using SPC and capability analysis to support defect prevention, process control, evidence-based decision-making and continual quality improvement within manufacturing and operational environments.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
√ Understand the principles and purpose of Statistical Process Control (SPC).
√ Explain common-cause and special-cause variation.
√ Distinguish between control limits and specification limits.
√ Identify suitable data for process monitoring and analysis.
√ Select appropriate variable and attribute control charts.
√ Construct and interpret X̄-R and X̄-S Control Charts.
√ Understand and apply p, np, c and u Charts.
√ Recognise abnormal process patterns and out-of-control signals.
√ Determine whether a process is statistically stable.
√ Understand the purpose of Process Capability Analysis.
√ Calculate and interpret Cp, Cpk, Pp and Ppk.
√ Use SPC and capability results to support process improvement decisions.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
This programme is suitable for Quality Managers, QA/QC Engineers, Quality Executives, Process Engineers, Manufacturing Engineers, Production Engineers, Supervisors, Technicians, Process Owners, Continuous Improvement Personnel and employees responsible for process monitoring, quality control or manufacturing improvement activities.
COURSE BENEFITS
This programme helps organisations strengthen process control by enabling employees to recognise abnormal variation, detect problems earlier and make more objective decisions using process data. Participants will also be able to evaluate whether processes are capable of meeting specifications and identify improvement priorities that support reduced defects, better consistency and continual quality improvement.
TRAINING METHODOLOGY
This workshop adopts a practical and participative approach, combining trainer explanation, statistical examples, guided calculations, process-data exercises, control-chart construction and interpretation, case studies and process capability analysis. Participants will progressively apply SPC and capability techniques to realistic manufacturing and quality scenarios for direct workplace application.
